Looking Ahead to Summer: The Summer of “Yes”

As the summer months approach, I can’t help but reflect on how special last summer was. It was the best summer I’ve ever had with my autistic teen. We called it the “Summer of Yes,” where I made a promise to say yes to anything reasonable she wanted to do. It was the first year she didn’t have summer school or therapy sessions for autism, so we had the freedom to just enjoy each other’s company and make the most of our time together.

We had so much fun—whether it was spontaneous trips to the beach, exploring new hobbies, or just sitting down to chat. It was such a gift for our relationship. No schedules to rush through, no extra appointments to attend. Just the joy of being present with each other. That summer felt like a beautiful reset for both of us.

This summer, I’m hopeful we can recreate that same sense of freedom and joy. Getting out of routine can be challenging, and I never quite know how the days will unfold, but I’m optimistic. I’ve learned that sometimes the best moments come when you’re open to stepping away from expectations and embracing the unexpected.

So, here’s to another summer of saying yes to the things that bring us closer, the adventures we create, and the moments of laughter and connection. I’m ready to make this summer just as meaningful as the last.
